Three volcanoes surround the lake, which consists, actually, of a volcano cone that collapsed and was filled with water afterwards. Embark on a ferry from Panajachel to Santiago Atitlan and, while crossing, you'll enjoy both the onshore and offshore landscape. Panajachel resembles a hippie town, with green hills and a population busy with maize growing. Santiago Atitlan holds close to Maya traditions, as women wear hand-embroidered blouses.
